History of the Project

GigaBeam Networks is working diligently with our partners to bring broadband access to unserved areas in both Bland and Montgomery Counties.  We began working on funding with a VATI 2021 project for the Shawsville/Elliston areas of Montgomery County.  This project was originally intended to be a completely wireless solution.

Soon after, Appalachian Power approached both counties in interest of a utility leverage project.  Both Bland and Montgomery Counties chose to work together and pursue regional funding from VATI 2022 to support a joint grant/utility leverage project.  With VATI 2022 funds being awarded, Appalachian Power proceeded to secure SCC approval of the utility leverage project.

With funding from VATI 2022 project grant which will support a fully fiber to the home network for both counties, the VATI 2021 project scope was changed to also be fiber to the premise.

On November 29th, 2022, the SCC approved the Appalachian Power’s request for the project.

GigaBeam, in partnership with Appalachian Power, will build hundreds of miles of fiber optic cable to offer gigabit+ level service throughout the project area.

The timeline below shows our prelimary plan for the project.  Being early in the project, times and details will change so check back often for updates!

The project will bring broadband access to the unserved areas of both Bland and Montgomery counties.  The maps below show the project service areas as well as the proposed/preliminary fiber paths.  As engineering completes, a more defined fiber path will be developed.
